On this off the beaten track journey to Japan, enjoy a privately guided hike on two of Japan's most legendary overland routes-the UNESCO-listed Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail and the beautiful Nakasendo Way - combined with time in Kyoto, Tokyo and Ise.
The Kumano Kodo is a magical series of pilgrimage trails with a history of over 1000 years that passes through the heavily-forested Kii Mountains in the Kansai region. The Nakahechi pilgrimage route is the one that was used by emperors and nobles from the 10th century onwards, hence its name 'the Imperial Route'. It focuses on the sacred sites of Yoshino & Omine, Koyasan, and the Kumano Sanzan (three grand shrines of Kumano). The Kumano Kodo and Spain's Camino de Santiago are the only UNESCO-listed pilgrimage routes in the world.
The Kumano Kodo's verdant mountains, quiet valleys, roaring rivers and plunging waterfalls provide us with a spectacular landscape as you immerse yourself in the region's rich, ancient history.
As part of the trip we will also explore The Nakasendo Way as we walk through a part of one of Japan's ancient highways. The Nakasendo, literally means 'the road through the mountains' and we will walk through its stunning Kiso Valley, with the beautifully preserved post towns of Magome and Tsumago.
Our trip includes local, authentic experiences in both Kyoto and Tokyo.
